Before You Start Planning Your Trip
Travelling to Ukraine – especially to the Kharkiv region – requires a little more preparation than an ordinary holiday. Before planning your itinerary, I recommend answering three simple questions.
1. Do You Need a Visa?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Before making any travel plans, please check the current entry requirements on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
2. What Is the Purpose of Your Visit?
People come to Ukraine for different reasons. Perhaps you would like to explore the history and culture of Slobozhanshchyna. Perhaps you are planning a future business project. Perhaps you are considering investing in Kharkiv. Or perhaps you simply want to understand today’s Ukraine beyond the headlines. The purpose of your visit helps determine the most appropriate itinerary.
3. Is Consular Assistance Available?
Before travelling, it is worth checking whether your country has an embassy or consular representation operating in Ukraine and whether you would be able to contact it quickly in the event of an emergency. Only after these three questions have clear answers does it make sense to begin planning your trip.
Travelling Around the Kharkiv Region
Because of the current security situation, access to certain parts of the Kharkiv region may be restricted. Routes are always planned according to the latest information available and may need to be adjusted before or during your visit.
Choosing Where to Stay
Accommodation should be selected with more than comfort in mind. When choosing a hotel or apartment, I recommend considering:
- the location within the city;
- the availability of a nearby shelter;
- proximity to potentially sensitive infrastructure;
- transport accessibility;
- the practicalities of moving around the city during your stay.
These factors are often just as important as the hotel itself.
Flexible Planning
No itinerary should be considered final until the day of travel. Changes in the security situation may require adjustments to the route, the timetable or, occasionally, the cancellation of visits to particular locations. Flexibility is simply part of travelling responsibly in today’s Ukraine.
